About John McHugh

John M. McHugh has proudly served as the Congressman of the 23rd Congressional District in Upstate New York for over 15 years. During his time in office, Rep. McHugh has earned a record of fiscal responsibility, lowering taxes, protecting Seniors' interests and rights, improving our schools, protecting America's farmers, and protecting our great nation. He brings to the House of Representatives more than 30 years of demonstrated public service to Northern New York, including eight years as a State Senator.
In addition to lowering taxes, McHugh believes one of Congress' top priorities is to make our government less intrusive and more efficient. He has fought to eliminate the marriage tax, the telephone tax, and the death tax. With Congressman McHugh's support, Congress has maintained critical services, protected vital programs like Social Security and Medicare, and provided American taxpayers with the first meaningful tax relief since 1984.
Through his travels in the eleven-county 23rd Congressional District, John McHugh knows that many individuals do not have access to health insurance. Consequently, affordable and accessible health care for people residing in rural areas is a priority for Rep. McHugh. He firmly believes that any discussion of health care reform must include a discussion of how the costs affect families and their ability to secure adequate health care coverage.
Congressman McHugh also has a special commitment to America's farmers. He has been a leader in the fight to help farmers secure better prices for their crops and has voted to extend crop insurance protections to specialty crop farmers. This effort ensures that farmers will have a better safety net in place to make it through the tough times that occur because of falling prices or extreme weather. He has been recognized as a "Champion of Dairy Farmers" for his aggressive approach to addressing the needs of dairy farmers. Furthermore, Congressman McHugh has been successful in enacting the Option 1-A pricing system, which provides higher payments to farmers for their milk.
Providing a quality education for our children is also one of John McHugh's top priorities. He believes that a good educational foundation allows children to reach their full potential and lead responsible adult lives. Additionally, Rep. McHugh has voted to send education money directly to the classroom to provide stronger, better schools through local control.
